Quiet Down Please!

A set of shipping guidelines expected to be finalized this month are designed to promote whale and dolphin health. The voluntary ground rules from the U.N. Int’l Maritime Organization are meant to inform shippers about levels of machine-made noise that are safe for marine animals. Conservationists have asserted that high noise levels from motors, propellers and other gear may harm marine animals. The report noted that newer, more efficient engines can save energy as well as run more quietly.
