Exploring your surroundings can be the best way to discover things you don’t know about and uncover the past. But it’s not everyday you come upon a 110-year-old shipwreck chilling in the middle of an Ohio River tributary.
To see the incredible ship and learn more about its past, scroll below:
A kayaker and friends were paddling around when they found a very old shipwreck in the Ohio River.
They decided to look around the ship and see what was on it.
Despite its age, it was able to support the kayakers’ weight.
Nature was doing its best to take over the ship with plant life.
Machinery that powered the engines were still on the ship.
The ship looked as though it had been abandoned for several years.
The ship actually has a very colorful past. It was originally used as a sight-seeing ferry in NYC.
Later, it was used to fight in both World Wars.
Thomas Edison used the vessel to test our communications inventions.
It also appeared in Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” music video. Random.
In the later part of the 1980’s, the ship was retired and send to a tributary where it hasn’t moved.
Even the original rope is still attached to the ship.
You can still find it today, rusting away but don’t expect any warm welcomes. Trespassers have been known to be chased out.
Whoa, I’m not sure that I would have explored the ship if I saw it. It looks a little too scary. Kudos to the trespass- I mean, kayakers – for the great pictures.
